| Suitable Sample: |
- Either blood or feathers may be submitted, but blood is the preferred sample.
- Blood: Heparinised blood is required. From small birds, a few drops is sufficient.
- Feathers
From small birds, two primary feathers are required. For medium-sized birds two secondary flight or tail feathers are sufficient. For larger birds, breast or back feathers may be taken. |
| Unsuitable Sample: |
- Mature chest feathers are unlikely to yield DNA for testing.
- Feathers that have been collected from the ground or moulted feathers are not suitable.
- Clipped feathers cannot be tested.
